The Las Vegas Paiute Tribe currently operate a smoke shop in the Las Vegas area and a golf course in the northwest valley, and now multiple new business projects in the medical marijuana industry are underway.

The federally-recognized tribe plans to open two medical marijuana dispensaries as well as a marijuana cultivation and production facility before 2017, according to Las Vegas Sun.

Benny Tso, chairman of the Las Vegas Paiute Council, said the tribe has partnered with an Arizona medical marijuana dispensary to create and maintain their Nevada dispensaries. A groundbreaking ceremony recently took place.

“We determined this is a viable and feasible opportunity of economic development for the tribe,” Tso said.

Their approximately $5 million construction project is expected to be completed within nine months, said Duke Rodriguez, of Ultra Health, an Arizona dispensary. “Today, the Paiutes push forward on a commitment to their people of gaining economic independence and tribal self-sufficiency.”

The Paiute tribe joins a few other Native American tribes in the U.S. marijuana industry. More tribes throughout the U.S. are expected to enter into the marijuana industry in the future.
