NY Governor Predicts State Will Legalize Marijuana in 2021

Soon after New Jersey legalized recreational marijuana on Nov 3, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he believes his state will legalize marijuana in 2021.

“I’ve supported it (marijuana legalization) for years,” Cuomo told WAMC. “I think this year it is ripe because the state is going to be desperate for funding. Even with everything else, we’re still going to need funding, and it’s also the right policy. So I think we get there this year.”

Cuomo first showed his support for cannabis legalization in 2018 after the New York Department of Health issued a report favoring legalization. But the idea was squashed in the state Senate.

Although Democrats gained control of the state Senate in 2019, lawmakers ultimately remained split about where taxes from cannabis sales would be allocated.

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic halted any chance of a marijuana measure from advancing. However, it is looking like 2021 will be New York’s year for adult-use cannabis legalization.
