Elko City Council Bans Medical and Recreational Marijuana Sales

In Elko, no marijuana of any kind can be sold. The city council voted to ban medical and recreational marijuana sales. The mayor was the tie-breaking vote.

Councilman John Patrick Rice opposed the ordinance, according to Reno Gazette Journal. Rice proposed a different approach: allowing medical marijuana sales and banning recreational marijuana sales. After reviewing dozens of letters from residents, along with many patient testimonials, he voiced support for medical marijuana.

Councilmember Reece Keener, said that despite the compelling testimonials, permitting medical marijuana dispensaries to sell marijuana is a violation of the council’s oath of office.
